Pinterest’s Annual Wedding Trends Report shows a clear shift in engagement ring preferences, with Gen Z leading the way toward nostalgic shapes, vibrant stones and statement-making stacks.
But what’s driving this bold move away from classic solitaires? Neil Dutta, Managing Director at engagement ring specialists Angelic Diamonds, says uts all about self-expression, individuality and pushing back against tradition.
Pinterest Trend #1: Maximalist Ring Stacks and Mixed Metals
Searches up: 1,600% for unique ring stacks, 297% for mixed-metal stacks
“Maximalist ring stacking is one of the most exciting shifts in 2025,” says Dutta. “It’s not just about piling on rings, it’s about layering meaning, with each piece telling its own unique story.”
“We’re seeing a move toward mixing metals, stones, and textures to build stacks that feel as individual as the couples wearing them. It’s about creating something that feels bold, beautiful, and completely their own.”
The trend is also reflected in celebrity choices, as Dutta explains:
“Hailey Bieber and Kylie Jenner have embraced mixed-metal stacks, where gold and silver meet in bold, personal ways. It’s not just about style – it’s about creating something layered with meaning.”
“Dua Lipa’s chunky gold engagement ring shows how maximalism can feel elegant and effortless. It’s a statement, but it’s still chic and modern.”
“The shift away from minimalism is part of a wider cultural move toward self-expression. People are embracing bigger, bolder jewellery pieces that reflect who they are. Maximalist stacking is the perfect way to make a statement without compromising on elegance.”
Pinterest Trend #2: Colourful Stones with Personality
Searches up: 349% for pink diamonds, 328% for sapphires, 179% for brown diamonds
“Colour is making a huge impact in the world of engagement rings,” says Dutta. “And the best part is that coloured stones give couples the opportunity to be creative without breaking the bank.”
“Whether it’s a pink diamond or a sapphire, coloured stones are becoming a symbol of personal meaning. They offer a chance to choose something that feels uniquely theirs, whether it’s a birthstone, a favourite colour, or a gem that has sentimental value.”

Celebrity choices are also driving this trend. Dutta explains:
“We’re seeing more and more coloured stones on the red carpet, especially yellow-toned diamonds and sapphires. Celebrities like Lady Gaga, Nicola Peltz, and Sofia Richie are leading the way with their vibrant choices.”
“Lab-grown coloured stones, in particular, are offering couples an affordable way to create a more customised ring. It’s not just about price; it’s about meaning. Coloured gems let couples choose something that speaks to their personality and values.”
Pinterest Trend #3: Unique Shapes and Vintage Silhouettes
Searches up: 1,458% for 1920s vintage rings, 175% for cushion cuts, 40% for kite cuts and 34% for heart-shaped rings.
“Engagement rings are no longer just symbols of love, they’re becoming personal statements,” says Dutta. “Couples want rings that reflect their journey together, not just the tradition of the past.”
“There’s a deep fascination with vintage and unique designs because they have a history to tell. People are drawn to the charm of an era, but want the design to feel modern. It’s about honouring the past while making it personal to the couple’s own story.”
Celebrity choices are influencing this trend, too. Dutta explains:
“Zendaya’s east-west cushion-cut diamond is a perfect example of this shift. It’s unconventional, but that’s what makes it so meaningful to her. It’s a ring that speaks to her sense of style and individuality.”
“Selena Gomez’s marquise diamond engagement ring is another great example, too. It’s got a timeless appeal, but Selena’s modern take shows that you can honour tradition while still creating something fresh.”
Final Thoughts from the Expert
“Gen Z is looking for engagement rings that are anything but conventional,” says Dutta. “It’s clear from Pinterest’s data, celebrity proposals, and the increasing demand for these trends that couples want rings that are unique to them.
“Whether it’s vintage, colourful, or stacked, people want rings that tell a story. It’s about creating something that is truly their own and that speaks to their identity as a couple.”
