7 things you shouldn’t do after your Botox treatment

Botox is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the world, with around 900,000 getting injections every year in the UK alone.

While many now consider Botox treatments as routine as a trip to a hair stylist or the nail salon, it’s essential to recognise that Botox isn’t as straightforward as it may seem. Proper aftercare is crucial to ensuring the best results and avoiding complications.

To help you perfect your aftercare routine, Dr. Akis Ntonos, co-founder of Aion Aesthetics and partner with Certainly Health, shares expert advice on what to avoid after your next Botox appointment.

Lie down

After a cosmetic procedure, it’s natural to want to rest or take a nap to distract yourself from any discomfort. However, Dr. Ntonos strongly advises against lying down immediately after Botox.

“Lying down too soon after your Botox treatment can cause the Botox to migrate to unintended areas of your face.

“This movement can cause uneven results or drooping in the treated areas. It’s recommended to stay upright for 4-6 hours post-treatment to ensure the Botox settles and stays in place.”

Use a tanning bed or go in direct sunlight

While it’s widely known that too much direct sunlight can increase your risk of skin cancer and premature ageing, many people are unaware that sun exposure can also compromise the results of Botox injections.

“Exposure to the sun’s UV rays immediately after Botox can worsen bruising and swelling at the injection points.

“Additionally, heat from the sun or tanning beds can cause Botox to migrate to unintended muscles, affecting the outcome of your treatment. Therefore, it’s best to steer clear of direct sunlight and tanning beds for a day or two after your appointment.”

Apply skincare or cosmetics

Skincare plays an important role in maintaining the benefits of Botox by hydrating the skin and improving overall skin health. However, applying skincare products or cosmetics immediately after your treatment can cause problems.

“Rubbing or massaging the treated areas with makeup or skincare products can unevenly disperse the Botox. Also, the bacteria from makeup, skincare, or even your fingers can increase the risk of infection.”

Bathe/shower in hot water

It’s important to keep the treated area clean, but be mindful of the water temperature. Dr. Ntonos advises avoiding hot water for at least 24 hours post-treatment.

“Hot water, whether in the form of a bath, shower, steam room, or sauna, can increase blood circulation, which may cause the Botox to spread.

“All in all, if you’re planning on bathing after your treatment, stick to lukewarm or cold water to yield the best outcome.”

Rigorously clean or rub your skin

As previously mentioned, keeping your skin clean is crucial after Botox, but it’s equally important to be gentle while cleansing. Dr. Ntonos warns against vigorously scrubbing areas treated with Botox:

“Rubbing or scrubbing the skin can not only cause the Botox to migrate from the target muscles but also increase the risk of bruising or irritation.

“To avoid these hurdles, gently wash your face with a mild cleanser and pat the skin dry with a washcloth or towel.”

Exercise strenuously

Any doctor will recommend staying active; however, after Botox injections, it’s crucial to avoid strenuous exercise. Dr. Ntonos emphasises the risks associated with excessive movement post-procedure.

“Heavy exercise can boost your heart rate and blood flow, which could result in migration of your Botox, bruising, or unevenness. While it may be tempting to head to the gym on your way home, consider scheduling your appointment on your off-day to get a full 24-hour rest.”

Wear headwear or headbands

Dr. Ntonos advises against tight headwear, such as hats or headbands, for the first 24 hours after your treatment. These accessories can interfere with the healing and effectiveness of your injections.

“Headwear, similarly to heavy cleansing, can cause pressure that hinders the outcome of your treatment.

“To keep your post-Botox skin protected, it’s best to avoid headwear that could compress the injection sites.

“If you need to keep your hair back, opt for a loose ponytail or use gentle hair clips instead.”
