As #skintok has hit 19 billion views on TikTok, it’s no secret that people are looking for more targeted skincare than ever before.
From salicylic acid for pores to glycerin for hydration, people want products that are tailored to their skin concerns.
However, one skin woe the nation is increasingly looking for a solution for is the neck and decolletage.
Absolute Collagen has spotted that Google searches for ‘neck wrinkles’ have surged by 71% in the past month alone, while there has been a 128% increase in interest over the past six months for the same query on TikTok.
What’s more, Google searches for ‘how to remove neck wrinkles at home’ and ‘neck firming cream’ have climbed this year by 20% and 22%, respectively.
But why exactly is this such a common skincare concern, and what can we do about it?
Dr Dave Reilly, Senior Scientist at Absolute Collagen, explains:
“From 25 onwards, you begin to produce less and less collagen. Collagen is a major component of our skin’s connective tissue, preventing wrinkles and boosting elasticity. This is why wrinkles and fine lines might start to appear as you exit your twenties.
“While there are several effects of diminishing collagen production, the most noticeable, and often talked about, is the reduced elasticity of the skin. This can be particularly prominent in areas where you have delicate skin, such as around the eyes, mouth and neck and decolletage. For many people, this loss of collagen is noticeable in the form of fine lines and ‘neck bands’, otherwise known as neck wrinkles.
“Bad skincare habits also accelerate the ageing of your neck skin. Although more people are applying SPF to their face daily, many often forget to apply it to their neck and chest area, which are frequently exposed to harmful UV rays that damage the skin.
“Interestingly, poor posture can also contribute to the appearance of neck lines as repeatedly looking down can cause your neck to crease – which can potentially become a permanent wrinkle.
“Fortunately, there are things you can do to help improve the appearance of the skin on your neck and chest.
“Firstly, make sure to apply at least SPF 30 to not just your face but your entire neck and any exposed parts of your chest every day – even if it isn’t a sunny day!
“Whether your neck is already a skin concern, or you are simply trying to prevent it from becoming one, using a cream that is specifically for your neck and decolletage is an important step for your skincare routine. These products, such as our Neck and Dec Cream, will contain ingredients designed to really sculpt and firm this part of your skin – often more so than an everyday moisturiser. So, make sure to apply cream to your neck and decolletage diligently every evening after washing your face.”
