According to Magdalena Gierasinska, Head of Product and Display at Barker and Stonehouse, a little seasonal TLC goes a long way in extending the life of your outdoor setup.
Why Autumn Care Matters
“The most common mistake I see people doing is leaving garden furniture exposed to the elements for long periods without any protection,” says Gierasinska. “Even the most weather-resistant pieces benefit from a good quality cover. We’d never ignore our sofas indoors for months on end, and outdoor furniture deserves the same care if you want it to last.”
Durability is now as much a buying decision as design. Materials like powder-coated aluminium, synthetic rattan, and FSC-certified hardwoods such as teak are increasingly popular, combining style with year-round performance.
Autumn Garden Furniture Care Checklist
Magdalena recommends a seasonal routine to keep your furniture in top condition:
- Give it a deep clean: Use a soft brush and mild soapy water.
- Protect wooden or metal surfaces: Apply a protective treatment to prevent rot, rust or swelling.
- Tighten fixtures: Check all screws and fittings.
- Cover and store where possible: Use breathable covers and move items indoors if you can.
Extra Protection for Wooden Furniture
Prolonged rain is one of the biggest threats to wooden furniture. “To help your wooden pieces withstand rainy weather, apply a PU coating to acacia wood at least once a year,” she advises. This not only repels water but also keeps the surface looking its best. Regularly check for mildew, sanding back any rough patches before refinishing.
Covers, Storage, and Elevation
“In the event of heavy rainfall or even mild flooding in Autumn, your best defence is prevention,” Gierasinska explains. “If storage isn’t possible, invest in high-quality, breathable covers. Keep furniture raised with feet or risers to allow airflow and prevent contact with standing water.”
Protect Cushions and Soft Furnishings
Outdoor cushions and rugs are especially vulnerable. “These should always be stored indoors or in waterproof storage boxes,” says Gierasinska. Cushion bags offer extra protection, but avoid polythene bags that trap moisture. Never store cushions under protective furniture covers long-term, as this can lead to water stains and mould.
