A comfortable bed is one of the most important factors for a good night’s sleep.
Being able to recreate the small touches of luxury often enjoyed with an overnight stay within the comfort of your own home is something that many strive to achieve.
Here, we share some expert commentary on how to dress your bed like a hotel on behalf of Charles Williams, co-founder of bedding and mattress platform Bed Sava.
“Quality sleep starts with creating your perfect sanctuary to relax within. By focusing on quality materials, clean lines and thoughtful extras, you can transform your bedroom and nightly sleep routine into a space worthy of a five-star hotel suite.”
Laying the foundations |
The top hotels know that a great room starts with high quality basics, so choosing the best valances and fitted sheets you can afford for your beds base layer will set the tone for a pristine, smooth look.
A deep-pocket fitted sheet will fit more snugly around your choice of mattress without pulling or bunching, and will be more securely fit in place for those who tend to toss and turn in their sleep.
A valance will add a decorative flourish to your bed, and will also help to conceal your bed base. For the added high-end hotel touch, opt for a valance in white or neutral tones.

Choosing Duvets & Covers |
The secret to the effortlessly fresh and inviting appeal of a hotel bed lies in the layering, and selecting seasonally appropriate duvets and covers.
To ensure year-long comfort, I’d suggest a high-fill hypoallergenic microfibre or down duvet with a tog rating of between 10.5 and 13.5 in the colder months, swapping to a 4.5 tog in the summer to stay cool and comfortable during warmer nights.
The top hotels will want to demonstrate to guests how they maintain the upkeep and cleanliness of their hotel bedding, and will highlight this with white or light coloured duvet covers. You may also want to consider layering an added flat sheet in between your duvet and sheet for a more refined hotel look, and easier laundering.
Perfectly Plump Pillows |
The number of pillows needed for a great night’s sleep all boils down to personal preference, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add additional items for aesthetic reasons.
It’s customary to decorate a double / king-size bed with four sleeping pillows, two firm, and two soft to medium so that all needs are catered for. Feather & down or hotel-grade microfibre pillows will help your bed to emulate the classic ‘sink-in’ effect of a luxury hotel bed, and two square pillows can also be added to the back of a bed-frame for an added Instagram-worthy touch of luxury.
Blankets & Throws: Texture, Size & Placement |
A well-dressed hotel bed will almost always feature a folded throw or blanket to maximise comfort and add a touch of texture and warmth.

Chunky wool knits or cashmere blends offer a contrasting appeal to the cotton sheets underneath, and can either be folded length ways to drape neatly across the foot of a bed, or layered diagonally for a more boutique feel.
During the winter months, a heat saving waffle blanket or additional quilted layer can be placed on top of a duvet for extra insulation, without compromising on style.
Mimicking A Hotel ‘Turndown’ Service |
Incorporating a nightly ‘turndown’ ritual to your bedtime routine can help your mind and body start to prepare for rest, and it’s actually easier to replicate this indulgent hotel offering at home than you might think.
Start by removing any decorative cushions, pillows or blankets/throws that you don’t require for sleeping and place them away, then fold back your duvet to halfway down the bed, to reveal your flat sheet layer. Next, smooth and fluff your designated ‘sleeping’ pillows, and lay out a fresh hand towel, glass of water, and a bedtime snack on your nightstand. Finally, dim the lights of your bedroom, and add a spritz of a relaxing pillow mist scent – such as lavender or eucalyptus – to help you settle into a peaceful sleep.
