As domestic tourism in the UK continues to thrive, travellers are looking beyond traditional hotspots in search of secluded, experience-rich destinations. Northumberland has rapidly emerged as a sought-after alternative, and the rural southwest of this county – England’s least densely populated – offers an unrivalled blend of tranquillity, adventure, and luxury. It is the perfect setting for families, groups of friends, or multi-generational gatherings seeking to create cherished memories away from the crowds.

Nestled on the peaceful banks of the South Tyne River, in the heart of the breathtaking North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The Old Rectory is a hidden gem on the Northumberland-Cumbria border. This magnificent 17th-century retreat has been beautifully restored to offer an opulent yet welcoming escape, accommodating up to 12 guests across six impeccably designed bedrooms. Whether celebrating a special occasion or simply seeking a restorative retreat, The Old Rectory offers the perfect balance of luxury and adventure.

Managed by esteemed restaurateur Nick Parkinson (son of the late Sir Michael Parkinson), who also runs the acclaimed farm-to-fork The Kirkstyle Inn next door. The property’s interiors, designed in collaboration with Edinburgh-based interior designer Emily Smoor of Fantoush, exude timeless sophistication. Blending antique charm with contemporary comforts, the home features earthy tones, striking artwork, and a light-filled kitchen and dining space – all designed to create an atmosphere of effortless elegance and relaxation.
