Tips to Promote Winter Wellness in Your Bedroom

In a pursuit of wellness, the new year motivates and embraces finding new ways to incorporate wellbeing into more than just our lifestyles.

As a place where we turn to unwind and relax, our bedrooms are vital in nurturing feelings of wellness.

In fact, Google searches for “tips to get better sleep” have increased by more than 5,000% across the UK in the last 30 days, highlighting how invested we have become in improving our sleep quality as we move forward in the new year.

With this in mind, Graham and Green owners, Jamie and Lou Graham highlight some of the simplest ways to nurture a relaxing bedroom environment.

Speaking with Georgina Sturmer, counsellor and registered member at the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, Georgina suggests why sleep quality should be a key focus for wellbeing as we head into the new year.

“Good quality sleep plays an enormous role in our physical and mental wellbeing. We all need that downtime to recharge our batteries and rejuvenate ourselves for everything that we need to do the following day.

“When our sleep environment feels fresh and comfortable, we are setting ourselves up to feel calmer, more relaxed and to sleep better. It feels as if we are taking control of our rest and sleep patterns.

“When we invest time and energy in improving our sleep environment, we are also sending ourselves a signal that we are deserving, which is linked with our sense of confidence and self-esteem.”

Ways of refreshing your bedroom to promote wellness

Hone your lighting

Jamie and Lou suggest one of the simplest ways to nurture a relaxing bedroom environment is to hone your lighting.

“While typically, your bedroom should be dark to improve sleep quality, during the day consider ways to fill the space with light, through updating lighting fixtures, or strategically placing mirrors to reflect the natural glow.”

Purposeful decluttering

“Sift through any unnecessary items to declutter your bedroom space. This might include clearing surfaces of excess items, and only keeping those that serve a purpose or spark joy in your bedroom. You can also use this opportunity to streamline your wardrobe, donating any clothes that you no longer wear or need and updating with clever storage solutions.”

Carefully selected scents

“Treat your senses with carefully selected scents to fill your bedroom. When creating a calming atmosphere and to help you feel better rested, opt for scents such as lavender and chamomile in candles and diffusers.”

Embracing nature indoors

“To enhance the wellness of your home’s decor, consider incorporating natural elements such as houseplants, natural fabrics and wooden textures.”

Different types of plants and natural fabrics can have a different effect on your wellbeing, so carefully consider the needs of your home environment. This might include:

  • Snake plants – Suggested to help filter the air in your home and remove toxic pollutants
  • Lavender – Supports relaxation and helps to provide relief from stress
