How and why hair oils are changing the hair care game

Hairdresser Nicola Wilcox from Capital Hair and Beauty has partnered with a Trichologist to reveal how and why hair oils are changing the hair care game and weighed in on whether Rosemary is the ‘miracle oil’ it’s made out to be.

Rosemary Oil: Myth or Magic?

Trending across platforms like TikTok, with 723k posts under the ‘hairgrowth’ hashtag (3k in the past month) and 282k posts under the ‘hairoil’ hashtag (2k in the past month), these hair care rituals have clearly captured widespread interest, reflecting a growing demand for natural hair treatments.

But whether you’re indulging in a pamper night at home or treating yourself to a salon visit, can incorporating these extra hair care steps into your routine truly work wonders for the health and appearance of your hair?

Nicola Wilcox, Professional Hairdresser and Brand Executive at Capital Hair and Beauty, and Faisal Ahmed Hammadi, an expert Trichologist, have weighed in on this question. They explain why hair masks, scalp serums and hair oils are essential steps in any haircare routine – and how often you should be using them for the best results.

How Often Should You Apply Hair Masks, Oils and Scalp Serums?

Hair Masks – Weekly

Nicola says: “Every hair type is unique, but using a treatment or hair mask once a week is generally beneficial.

“Factors such as how frequently you wash your hair may affect this routine; for instance, if you wash your hair weekly, you might consider using a mask every other wash.”

Hair oil – Two to three times a week

“Incorporating hair oil into your routine 2-3 times a week, as needed, can do wonders for your hair. These beneficial formulas usually consist of leave-in oils applied from mid-length to the ends, with no need to wash them out.

“However, make sure to avoid putting oil on your scalp. Applying oil directly to the scalp may cause dehydration and trigger excess oil production. Just apply enough to cover your roots and hair – you’ll still see positive results.”

Scalp serums – Daily

“Hair oils are nourishing liquids primarily designed to hydrate and condition the hair strands. They are excellent for moisturizing dry, damaged hair and can add shine and luster to your locks.

“Scalp serums, on the other hand, are specially formulated to target the root of the hair problem – your scalp. They often contain active ingredients like vitamins, antioxidants, and peptides that promote a healthy scalp environment. Scalp serums can help with issues like dandruff, hair loss, and a dry or itchy scalp”

The Benefits of These Hair masks and Oils

Hair Masks

Nicola explains “Think of hair masks as a luxurious spa treatment for your hair! They deliver deep hydration, smoothing out frizz. Plus, they strengthen your strands, making them less prone to breakage and damage.

“Whether you’re looking to define your curls or protect against heat styling, a good hair mask can rejuvenate and transform your locks, leaving them soft, shiny, and healthy.

“For maximum benefit from your hair mask, wrap your hair in a warm towel while it’s on. The heat will help the active ingredients penetrate more deeply.”

Hair Oil

“Hair oils are also an excellent product for healthy shiny hair and helping to protect against humidity and heat. They can also be used to smooth frizz and add shine.

“Today’s hair oils have evolved from the heavy, thick argan oils of the past, making it important to choose an oil that suits your specific hair type.

“A versatile option for all hair types is the K18 Molecular Repair Oil, which protects hair from heat up to 232°C. This lightweight oil reduces split ends by 78% and provides 24-hour frizz control.”

Rosemary oil TikTok Trend: myth or magic?

Rosemary oil has taken TikTok by storm, boasting 151k posts under the ‘rosemaryoil’ hashtag in the UK, with 2k of those popping up in just the past month.

But what’s the real impact of rosemary oil on your hair?

To get the lowdown, Faisal Ahmed Hammadi, a trichologist and curly hair expert, has provided his professional take on the viral trend:

Faisal said: “Rosemary oil has been shown to support hair growth by improving circulation to the scalp and having anti-inflammatory properties.

“And when used regularly, it can help strengthen hair follicles and promote thicker, healthier hair.

“It can be applied by diluting it with a carrier oil and massaging it into the scalp.”

Nicola Wilcox, Hairdresser and Brand Executive at Capital Hair and Beauty summarises: “While hair masks and oils are widely recommended for promoting healthier, shinier hair, and even encouraging hair growth, their effectiveness relies on correct use and frequency.

“Incorrect application can cause issues such as excess oil production or scalp dryness, so it’s important to find the right balance. By selecting the appropriate products and using them properly, you can maximise their benefits and achieve stronger, more luscious hair.”
