Collagen supplements are trending, with Google searches for ‘are collagen supplements worth it’ up by 130%. Renowned for combatting the signs of ageing and helping to boost the body’s natural collagen reserves that deplete with age, collagen supplements have been soaring in popularity.
But are they really worth the hype and which is the best method to take them?
We spoke Face The Future’s Head of Clinic, Kimberley Medd, for her expert take.
Kimberley says, “It’s no wonder that collagen supplements are making a comeback given their significant benefits for skin and hair health. Collagen is a vital protein that provides structure to the skin, hair, and nails, and collagen supplements are a great way to maintain a youthful appearance, achieve healthy hair, and strengthen nails.
There are two ways to supplement collagen: topical creams and oral supplements. Collagen is a large molecule so topical creams, although hydrating and plumping, are sometimes unable to penetrate deep enough into the dermis to trigger collagen synthesis.
However, the body is better at breaking down oral collagen supplements through a process called hydrolysis whereby the peptides within the collagen are absorbed by the body. These supplements can reach the deeper layers of the skin where collagen is stimulated, improve skin elasticity, and boost skin hydration as well as promote hair growth and strength.
It’s important to note that individual responses to collagen supplementation may vary, and results may not be immediate or dramatic. Consistent use over time, combined with a healthy lifestyle and skincare regimen, is key to maximising the benefits of collagen supplements for skin and hair health.”
