Orange Wine is the latest TikTok trend

What is orange wine? Experts explain the latest TikTok beverage trend and where you can purchase it

Move over Aperol spritz, orange wine is quickly becoming the latest beverage trend ahead of summer 2022!

The orange coloured wine has taken social media by storm this April. The #orangewine hashtag has reached over 3.5 million views on TikTok and over 210,000 tags on Instagram so far, with numbers continuing to rise.

With this in mind, the kitchen design and retail experts at Magnet have taken a deeper look into the trend to reveal what the wine is, where it originated from and why it’s trending. The team have also shared the most popular products on the market and where to buy them, so you can bring the trend into your kitchen!

What is orange wine?

It is made in a similar way to white wine – but the deepened colour and flavour differences come as a result of leaving the skins and seeds on the white grapes during the production process. After the juice is fermented, it creates a deep amber-hued coloured liquid.

Why is it trending?

It’s trending across social media due to its aesthetic and unique appearance, alongside its hybrid taste. As well as over 3.5 million views on TikTok and over 210 thousand Instagram hashtags:

  • 60,500 global Google searches in April, a +22% increase compared to last year.
  • 13,100 searches on Amazon in April, a +51% increase compared to last year.
  • 1,500 searches on Pinterest in April, a +50% increase compared to last year.

Where did it originate from?

The winemaking technique used for orange wine has been used for thousands of years. It is thought to have originated from wine-producing regions in Georgia and was repopularised years later in Slovenia and Italy.

While orange wine isn’t commonly produced in the UK, some British vineyards have begun to manufacture this type of wine. For example, Ancre Hill Vineyard in the Welsh county of Monmouthshire charges £24.99 per bottle of their orange wine.

What does it taste like?

The taste of orange wine is hard to generalise as it can be made from any type of white grape. As well as colour, the grape’s skin and seeds add flavour and complexity. The flavour tends to have sour and nutty undertones and a rich aroma due to oxidation. Orange wine is more resemblant in taste and smell to white wine but has the body and structure of red wine. Importantly though, it doesn’t taste like oranges!

What food to pair it with?

Orange wine is versatile due to being high in tannins, but it is best paired with bold flavours. Strong cheeses, meats such as pork or lamb and spicy curries all compliment the flavours.

Where can you buy it?

Most orange wines are rare and as a result, can be expensive to buy from specialist wine shops or online. However, as the trend has continued to grow, supermarkets such as Morrisions and Waitrose are starting to sell more affordable options for those wanting to try the wine for themselves.

Renowned orange wines:

  • Macerao Naranjo Orange, £8.99 – Waitrose
  • Rigal Vin Orange, £10 – Morrisons
  • Litmus Orange Bacchus 2019, £17.45 – Guest Wines
  • Paleokeriso, £14 – Pure Wines

A spokesperson at Magnet commented:

“Orange wine has been rising in popularity over the past few years and is slowly making its way into more kitchens across the country. While it may look like a fad to many, this winemaking technique has been used for thousands of years and wine lovers believe it has returned to stay.”
